How Often Should I Get My Septic Tank Pumped?
Determining how often you need to have your tank pumped depends on the size of your tank, and how many people live in your home. Preventative maintenance can save you a lot of money.
Generally, a septic tank should be pumped out at least every 3 years as regular maintenance. If there are 4 or more people residing in the home, more frequent pump outs are required. Please see the chart to the right as a guide.
What Happens If My Septic Tank Is Not Pumped Regularly?
Organic waste, also known as sludge, builds up in the bottom of your septic tank. Over time, if not pumped out regularly, it builds up to the level of the outgoing pipe. It is then carried out to your leaching bed and pipes along with the grey water. As the sludge accumulates out in your bed, it eventually becomes blocked, backs up into your tank and then into your house. Ultimately, your septic bed will need replacing which is very costly but preventable with regular maintenance. Regular pumping of your tank helps to keep it healthy.
